Q: what is the best mod for a 1988 honda prelude?
ten easy point thanx my bro has a 1988 honda prelude and whats to make it faster but he is so uptight with cash thanxs ...
aust
A: The 3rd gen prelude is probably the hardest of the preludes to get any performance parts. If its mainly stock, Headers, high flow cat, Thermal R&D exhaust [best sound, best performance] Look on preludepower.com and prelude3g.com for how to get a good and relatively inexpensive cold air intake. There is the E-ram which will give you 8-10HP 10-15 trq gains and excellent throttle response.
Unless its the 2.0S carb then... you have to get rid of that B20A3 and you can get a B20A JDM, or B21A [which suck] but for really cheap and will bolt right in.
Best options are H22 vtec VERY EXPENSIVE and very hard to do, or a turbo which have to be frankensteined because there are no retail kits for that specific car.
An H22 swap with all the fixins that are necessary to make it run flawless and a full rebuild on the B20A5 or B20A JDM with a turbo cost about the same
Most importantly BRAKE AND SUSPENSION upgrades as this car handles terrific with the K-Sport coil over and you will need brakes to keep the cars speed in check.
Q: 1988 Honda prelude carburetor replacement?
How difficult is it to replace a dual carburetor on a 88 Honda prelude? I have little mechanical experience. Or should I just have it done in a shop?
A: It should be as simple as removing your air cleaner, disconnecting any vacuum hoses and the throttle linkage, then just un bolt from the manifold. Make sure when you replace them to completley remove the old gasket from the manifold flange and replace with a new gasket.
Q: 1988 honda prelude si fog lights come on without head lights on?
how do you hook up the fog lights without having to hard wire the whole system to make them come on when u hit the switch instead of them only being able to come on with the head lights?
i saw a video/diagram but i cant find it anymore.
A: Good question, i assume there is a fuse for your fog lights. If so, you could probably run a new power wire from the fuse to the switch. Disconnect the old power wire and test the switch. If it works, leave it like that.
Try to find a wiring diagram for your car. As popular as those Honda Prelude were/are, there should be some could information out there.
Q: Can I use a 1986 honda civic transmission on a 1988 Honda Prelude?
auto transmission
A: check the bolt pattern and the length, to see if it will work, and if your still not sure, ask the dealership to look it up, to see if the parts match.
Q: On a 1988 honda prelude S what wire do I hook a after market tech up to?
Whqt wire on the coil do i wire it to or on the computer?? plz help
A: im not 100% on an 88 prelude but i kno a lot fo stuff on hondas are exactly alike.. i did one on my 93 civic ex a couple years ago and the wire i hooked up to was baby blue in color and thats the rpm signal wire to the ecu. i think the wire from the tach was green andi hooked it up to the baby blue one. i jus did what the directions said to. u can always try that if u have a baby blue/ blue one and then if that doesnt work u can always test i guess with a tester. run the engine get a voltage tester, expose some copper of the wire u think it is and hook up the tester.... when u rev the engine the woltage should jump with it if thats the wire.

Q: the 1st gen mazda rx7 vs 1988 honda prelude .. 10 easy points?
what win in a drag and drift and lap ...mazda rx7 1st gen rotory vs non vtec honda prelude 1988 drag / drift/ lap thanks p.s you get 10 easy points if your answer is the best i get thanks lots
A: A drifting prelude? LMAO
The FB would win every time, even with a 12a in it because the owner would know his car better than someone with 'drift' prelude.

Takahashi Ryosuke
Q: 1988 Honda Prelude transmission fluid change?
The transmission on my honda prelude slips really bad and now reverse is starting to go out. The transmission fluid hasn't been changed in years, thi s is because I heard that you can't change the fluid because something about the fluid filter being connected to the transmission or something, is this true?
A: Doesn't sound like something honda would do. Check the passenger side of the transmission with the tire off. There should be a drain plug and a fill one. If changing the fluids doesn't work you'll need a new clutch or torque converter.
Q: my 1988 honda prelude si 5 speed starts without holding the clutch pedal in, whats wrong and how i fix it?
im not a newbie to the car so i would like details if possible thanks to those who help me :).
A: Sounds like the clutch safety switch has gone bad and stuck in the closed position. If you look at your clutch there will be a little plate on it that contacts this switch when you push it down(should have 2-3 wires coming from it).
Q: 1988 honda prelude si engine swap??
what is a honda vtech engine that will work in a 1988 honda prelude si 5-speed. im talking about a engine where i can put in with no modifications and will work with the exception of changing transmission and axels thanks
A: http://www.honda-tech.com
Search there, don't ask your question again. I'm sure many people have had the exact same question as you. Good Luck!
Q: My almost 18 year old is interested in buying his first car. It's a 1988 Honda Prelude 2.os Coupe 2.oL L4 FI
It seems to be in good shape body wise other than a little rust around the gas cap and the same side on wheel well. Seems well maintained and we are getting an Esso check on it. My question is ....is this a good car and what are the hidden quirks to it. IS IT WORTH $1150.00?
A: Here's what I would do.... Honda is a good car but you are looking at nearly 20 year old car. The car is older then the child who will drive it - rather hard!
I would take it to a mechanic and pay him for one hour worth of his time and go over it on the lift - before you pay for it.
As to rust, there is one thing to have a surface rust, but there is quite another to have rust on structural members and suspension/steering components. These cars are before galvanizing process was in common use. When they rust, they rust badly!
Hondas are well made cars but remember, parts are rather expensive if you must fix them, and no 20 year old product of any kind will be trouble free. Preludes were the Honda's technology show piece, so they are relatively complex cars. That means there are more to break and more to fix when they do.
A car may look pristine from top of the engine, but they will reveal its true self once on a life and looked at from under neath by a qualified mechanic. It will be the best 100 dollars well spent. Ask him to put his finding on paper and give you a quote to fix them. Use it as a price bargaining chip, too.
Ask the mechanic if he would be willing to pay $1150 IF he was buying it. It all depends on the condition.
I did this with my car purchase and narrowly escaped from buying one very abused car (and odometer turned back) that looked just fine from casual observation.
Q: 1988 Honda Prelude-Air conditioning problem.?
My 1988 Honda Prelude is having air conditioning issues.
The air conditioning blows cold air when the car is idle. After driving for about 10 minutes it starts to blow warm air. If I stop and wait and wait for 10 minutes it will start to blow air cold air again. In the winter I am able to use the air conditioner to defog the car without any problems it blows cold air to keep the car defogged.
One place that told me over the phone that I automatically need to replace the old system with a new one at a cost of $1000. Didn't go to them.
Second guy did not pay attention to my explanation of the problem. He started the car then after a few minutes felt the compressor and stuck a thermometer in the vent and then told me it works. I had to explain the problem again drive around for about 5 minutes and it started to blow warm air and which point he told he didn't know what the problem was. Third guy told me replace the old system then check for leaks which seems like cart before horse
A: As a backyard mechanic i would guess the clutch on the compressor is bad. When your rpm is high it slips but when it low at idle it turns. Try driving around and then look at the compressor you can tell if its turning or not. Have someone turn it on and off.
Only problem you will run into is you have to replace the compressor. thats around 300 bucks, Then you have to replace the gas. But 1988 the gas is not made anymore so you have to convert the system over. Over all it's going to cost a lot more than the car is worth.
You might be able to pull the clutch off another compressor and replace it but i have never tried this. I would guess it would be a bear.
Q: I just bought a 1988 Honda Prelude si 4ws i need a new clutch where do i get it?
A: take it to auto zone, they will hook up the scan tool and check for codes,or you can buy a haynes manual for $20 and it will show you everything, don't forget to change your air and fuel filters too, good luck, hope this helps
Q: Stereo Upgrade for 1988 Honda Prelude Si?
I've started commuting by car recently, and have come to the realization that my audio is not up to snuff. I need new speakers for sure, and would like to be able to play MP3 CDs (i have cassette only right now). I don't want to spend a ton of money on my beloved car, maybe $300 max. I can do the installation myself if necessary. Anybody out there who knows good 6 1/2" speakers, and a head unit? I don't need "boom boom" power, just a good natural range of sound. Thanks in advance!
A: Go to a pro audio shop, not best buy or circuit city and listen to the speakers and head units they have on display. That is the best way to find something in your budget that meets your sound quality. What may sound good to you may sound like junk to me. Its all a matter of opinions.
Q: So I have a 1988 honda prelude S with B20a3 Tonight it overheated and it was shootin coolent?
