Q: What kind of gas does a 1997 Honda Prelude use?
I was looking to buy a 1997 honda prelude and everyone says their great but some people said you HAVE to put premium gas in it, is this true or is it just a good idea to do this?
A: Okay no, wrong answers so far.
I own a 98 Honda prelude and i am in a Honda prelude club, with all Prelude's from 97-2001. You have to put premium in it. Trust me you do, its written all over the car for a reason. I remember one guy in our club tried putting 87 octane in it and it didn't sound good at all. You have to put premium in it, believe me i would love it if it would run off regular 87 with the prices, but if you buy the Prelude you gotta put premium cause the H22 engine in it needs 91+ octane to operate without damaging it. I tried putting 89 octane in it once, and it didn't sound good, it drove funny, put some octane booster in it cause i was afraid of driving it around like that and it worked fine again. Stick to premium if you buy the 97-01 prelude.
Another tip, if you're buying the prelude for gas mileage, its not your car. lol Most people in the prelude owners club get about 300 miles on about 12 gallons of premium. Since gas has gone up, a lot of owners have actually sold their prelude's too! So think about that as well if your in the market of one!
Q: Is a 1997 Honda Prelude a good car to buy?
Is a 1997 Honda Prelude a good car to buy and what common problems do they have? Thank you.
A: I drive an 01' Prelude and can tell you for sure that this car has alot to offer. It is a wonderful handling car, despite being a bit heavier than a Civic or Integra. The fifth generation Prelude was produced from 1997 till 2001 so aside from a very slight bump in horsepower in the 1999-2001 cars (only five horses) a 97 would be pretty much the same car as my 01, just a bit older. I have 105,000 miles on the odometer and it's as strong as it was when I bought it. Aftermarket support is also very nice. there is a host of parts available for the fifth generation Prelude, alot of which is certainly on my wish list! Try these sites for more info...

Q: I have a 1997 Honda Prelude which has a Cylinder #1 Misfire. Any help?
I have a 1997 Honda Prelude which has a Cylinder #1 Misfire. I changed the spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. What is the next thing I should be looking into. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
A: how many miles are on your prelude? the reason I ask is that honda has an exteded warranty on the 1997 models where the warranty on about anything that can cause the MIL to illuminate is covered for 15 years or 150,000 miles. if you have over the 150,000 then its out of that special warranty.
my guess is that one of 5 possibilities exist.
1) if the valves are way out of adjustment you can get the misfire code on the one cylinder. valves on that car should be adjusted every 30k
2) a leaking fuel injector will cause the misfire in one cylinder and not in the other
3) a hung egr valve will often dump the air into the intake and affect only one cylinder. not sure which one it affects on the prelude but typically it will flood out one cylinder with too much air and not affect the others
4) a leaking intake manifold gasket around the #1 cylinder
5) real remote possibility would be a leaking head gasket around #1
probably a fuel injector if you've replaced the ignition components
by the way, if the car does have under 150k and its in the US, put the old ignition stuff back on if you still have it as honda will pay to replace the cap, wires, plugs and to do an oil change one time betweek 75k and 150k on that car as part of the warranty extension. they won't replace the parts if they are not the originals.
hope that helps
Q: Will a 1997 Honda Prelude engine be worth while in a 1996 Mazda Protege?
I'm striving to improve the performance of my humble DX model car. It has many memories with it, so I'm not very willing to depart with the car itself. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
A: If you are an incredible mechanic with a lot of free time and money on your hands than it may be worthwhile. This transplant will take a lot of work and will give you very minimal power gains. 1997 Honda Prelude doesn't have much power either. Best bet would be to buy a different car. If you are truely serious obout performance buy a small RWD car and go from there.
Q: Does anyone know how many miles per gallon a 1997 Honda Prelude get and how big the fuel tank is?
My friend and I went to Exxon to get gas, he used $23.00 on 87 octane gas that costs $4.17 and filled up half his tank. He usually shifts at 2500 RPM.
A: the fuel economy data is available on www.fueleconomy.gov; for the prelude it was 20 city 24 highway with the manual transmission and 19 city 25 highway with the automatic transmission
the fuel tank capacity is 15.9 US gallons or 60 liters per the 1997 prelude owner's manual
hope that helps
Q: What is the best engine that i can put into a 1997 honda prelude??
Like engines that i can buy and install into my honda prelude.
any brand
any price
any anything
A: If price doesn't matter and you don't mind getting out of the Honda brand....
LS1 will definitely fit with a lot of work.
Otherwise...the K24 would be my next best choice. Plenty of torque to play with.
Q: 1997 Honda Prelude Jerking when try to start!!!!?
Hi you all experts!!!
I have 1997 Honda Prelude with 140k miles, yesterday when I tried to start it jerked for few time then started. It runs fine when started, I kept in my home garage and try not to drive it as I'm afraid it might die on me. Do you know why its doing that??? I am thiking it could be starter but could be worng.
Basically when you start it goes like ...kkkk...kkkk...kkkk...wrrooom...start :) I could not explain any better.....

A: Faulty starter or starter solenoid, bad connections, dirty battery terminals, worn clutch (won't fully disengage).
Q: Do I need to change my timing belt? 1997 Honda Prelude 85k miles?
Car works great (except new leak in windshield resevoir I haven't bothered to fix). Manual says replace at 105k miles which I'm 2 years away from at this point BUT also says replace at 7 years too. It has been 10 years. Should I replace now? Cost is 650-800 where I live. Should I go to dealership over local mechanics? Thanks.
A: He's Correct, honda updated the inervals to 60-70k . The h22 series motors usually go about 75-85k before the belt act's up
It can cause significant damage to the internals on the engine if it breaks suddenly. always call your local mechanics, you'd be suprised the savings over the dealership who only want's top dollar.
Q: where can I buy 1997 Honda prelude's bumper in derbyshire?
A: If your looking for OEM there are honda sites that have Genuine Honda parts...
collegehillshondaparts.com has a link to a huge database and blow up pictures of every part on your prelude...you can probably purchase them online and have it shipped to your house
if not there are a million auto part stores online that sell replacement body panels much cheaper but they might not fit as well
Q: 1997 honda prelude 100k miles for $4500. good deal? how much longer will it run?
I found a green 1997 honda prelude on autotrader.com with 100k miles for $4500. is this a good deal? how much longer will it last? will it last at least another 50k miles? also, this will be my first car. I'm 17 years old
and dont wurry I know how to handle it, all i've ever driven is my friend's mustang
A: Go to a car auction near you and watch cars like that one go through the sale and see what they are bringing there....Big difference I'd bet!
Q: 1997 honda prelude, starts up fine when cold, when the engine is warm it struggles to fire up, idles low, dies
engine starts up just fine in the morning before work, but if its been warmed up at all and i try to start the engine it will struggle to engage unless i feed it throttle, once engaged it wil idle very low, then die if im not feeding it fuel, after about 10-15 seconds it will idle fine.
also, my engine overheats if im not driving around, or, letting air cool her out.. i will overheat at stop lights.. just started happening, i changed the thermostat recently.. could it be fuel pump? filter? my plugs and caps are all good.
1997 honda prelude- 129k
A: The overheating is caused by the electric radiator fan that is not working. the fan is only used to pull air over the radiator when the car is stopped or at speeds lower than 30 mph. So the first thing to do is to find out why the fan isn't working and repair it. the fan could be seized and that would require a new fan motor. the temperature switch for the fan that senses engine temperature and turns the fan on could be open circuited in which case simply replacing the switch with a new one will fix it. Lastly, the fan relay may be bad.
the overheating is also responsible for the low idle and stalling. When you shut the car off, the high underhood temperature is causing the fuel in the fuel lines to the injectors to boil. The fuel vaporizes in the lines as the car sits. When you come back 10-20 minutes later and try to start it you are trying to inject vapor into the engine instead of fuel and the engine is running way too lean to operate as normal. By raising the engine speed up for 15 seconds you bring fresh fuel up from the fuel tank and then you'll start running normally again. This problem will go away after you fix the problem with the radiator fan.
hope that helps
Q: How much shall I sell my 1997 Honda Prelude 2.0i, with only 56k on it?
It's got 17" alloys, AC,black and tinted windows, and is a coupe.
A: 5th gen Preludes didnt come as 2.0, at least not in the states and Japan they didnt. They came with 2.2L H22a's. The Prelude is becoming a very rare and sought after car. If it wasn't for the K20 civic owners would still be dropping H22 in their cars.
Even though your's is close to 10 years old, I've seen 5th gens sell for as much as $17k USD. And those have close to 100K miles. But that is around my part of the country, of course that'll vary depending on where you live.
A Prelude with mileage that low, and depending whether its an auto or 5spd, body condition, and location could go for $10-11k USD. Put the stock rims back on, and sell the 17s separately.
Edit- You have a F20A...probably not worth as much as a 2.2 VTI
Just check the European version of KBB.com, This will at least help you start on a price.
Q: how do i fix the front suspension of my 1997 honda prelude?
i got hit by a car.. the front driver side was hit... i've replaced the upper control arm, the strut, and the fender, but the spring is still rubbing against the control arm..
A: depends on whats wrong...replace worn parts.
Q: 1997 Honda Prelude Check Engine Light - EGR fluid...?
Hi, I have a question regarding my 1997 Honda Prelude... The car has ~168k miles on it... The check engine light came on in 10/06 and I had it checked - it was EGR fluid insufficient flow.
The small independent shop recommended that I change my EGR valve. We changed it and the check engine light went off for a week, then it came back on. I went back to the shop and they think that the EGR valve might be defective, therefore they replaced it. However, the check engine light remains on since then. I lost faith in the shop and went out of money, therefore I let the check engine light on as it is since early this year.
At my recent oil change, the technician noticed that there's oil at the back of my engine, therefore suggested that my head gasket might have a leak. I have some money now but my budget is tight.
I would like to know what u think my prelude's check engine light is indicating, thus saving me money by not falling into anymore wrong diagnostics. Also, dealership?
A: Honda has a known issue with EGR flow, and it is rarely the valve. Sometimes it is the control of the valve (vacuum line, solenoid, connections etc) but the valve is usually fine.
The issue with the flow is that the ports for the recirculated gas cokes up reducing flow levels. All that is required is to remove the plugs in the rail, clean the deposits out and replace the plugs. Honda stocks the replacement plugs, for about $0.45 (X4) each.It can be done in about 2 hours by a DIYer.
As for the oil leak, watch it, and pay attention to the to the volume of oil you use. If it is only a drip or two, save your money until it gets bad enough that the little car is no longer dependable, or you can no longer afford to clean the deposits from you driveway.
Q: 1997 Honda Prelude Sh Problem?
Hi, i have a 1997 honda prelude sh. i recently bought this car and since i bought it, this problem was there. Every time i turn on the car when is cold the car turns and and then the acceleration (rpms) go real high about close to 3. Then after 5-10 seconds the rpms goes alittle down and that's when the rpms goes up and down up and down till the car is warmed up like about 4 minutes. what could this problem be. i recently tried the chevron fuel system cleaner but only once to clean the injectors. should i keep using this and i ALWAYS but premium gas in my cars. Could some one please tell me could be the problem. any thoughts. Thanks
A: This sounds like your IAC (idle air control) unit is going out. It is located around your throttle body on your intake manifold. COST: $35-75 and easy DIY job. Good luck
